Hairy Hikers raise over £8000 for Christmas Day at Marie Curie hospice

A team of ‘Hairy Hikers’ from Edinburgh Airport have been baking cakes, climbing mountains, cycling, doing the 5k Pretty Muddy and coughing up cash every time they curse to raise cash for Marie Curie, the terminal illness charity.

A cheque for £8464 was handed over at Edinburgh Airport and the cash will go towards paying for Christmas Day at Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh.

In January Georgina ‘Georgie’ McBroom who is the Health and Safety Manager at Edinburgh Airport and the cofounder of the Hairy Hikers along with colleagues Dorothy Strachan and Claire Brown and set about using 2016 to get fit and raising money for a good cause.

The goal of climbing Ben Nevis was agreed on and very soon 15 people from the Operations Team at Edinburgh Airport had signed up for the Hairy Hikers challenge and had agreed to take part in the training needed to build them up for conquering the UK’s biggest mountain.

Georgie recently lost two members of her extended family to cancer. Nearly all members of the Hairy Hikers have had similar experiences and the team bonded during the training period by sharing their experiences of losing family members and friends.

Georgie McBroom said:

“We set up the Hairy Hikers because we wanted to get fit and have fun – and also to raise money for the amazing service Marie Curie provides.

“The Hairy Hikers are immensely proud of what we have achieved for Marie Curie this year, and the amount we managed to raise far exceeded any of our expectations. We hope they have a lovely Christmas Day at the hospice.

“It has been a great team effort but if it wasn’t for my colleagues Dorothy Strachan and Claire Brown helping to organising the training walks it would’ve been a very lonely walk up that hill!

“Our team is made up people of all different ages and fitness levels but together we worked hard to raise money for this fantastic charity. We are grateful to all the support from our colleagues at Edinburgh Airport, and all our friends and families.”

Fiona Bushby, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie Edinburgh and West Lothian, said:

“I am absolutely thrilled and delighted with the final total for Hairy Hikers. This means such a lot to us. And it is wonderful that they have chosen to sponsor Christmas Day here at the Hospice as part of our Pay for a Day campaign.”
