Community support

Edinburgh Airport is committed to giving back to its local communities. In 2006, the airport established a Community Fund to contribute to local projects and good causes. The Fund is administered by the Community Forum, a group made up of airport staff and external representatives.

All applications for assistance are considered on a case by case basis but projects must match at least one of the forum’s three themes – education, environment or sport. Applications must also be for specific projects rather than base sponsorship, and should be focussed on the key communities around the airport.

Below are just a few of the projects that Edinburgh Airport has supported in 2009:

Ratho Breakfast Club

In 2009 Edinburgh Airport sponsored Ratho Primary School's membership to the AEGON Breakfast Club. The club meets first thing in the morning and provides children with a healthy breakfast. Breakfast clubs are about more than just healthy eating. They improve attendance and concentration, as well as social skills. And they help children to get into good eating habits early on in life.

Newbridge Bowling Club

Newbridge Bowling Club has built a new sports pavilion thanks to a £7,000 donation from Edinburgh Airport. As there are no council run facilities in the village, the club – which was founded in 1907 - is the only recreational building and venue for social gathering, and also acts as a community hall for local residents. The club – a registered charity – used to operate from an ageing porta cabin, and approached Edinburgh Airport to help fund a new pavilion. The facility will includes new changing facilities for the club’s 178 members. The funding boost arrived at just the right time for the club as it prepared to host the inter-counties league at the new look pavilion. The tournament was held on 20 June 2009 and will brought together teams from across Edinburgh, Fife and the Borders.

Little Flyers Nursery

Edinburgh Airport has donated £3,571 to Little Flyers Nursery in Broxburn to revamp their garden. The money comes from the Edinburgh Airport Community Trust Fund and will be used by the nursery to develop a stimulating and challenging play area for the children including, a vegetable patch, digging area, a sensory garden and a large physical activity area. More information about the Community Fund will be published in the 2009 Corporate Responsibility Report.
