The Edinburgh airport young firefighters
The Edinburgh Airport Young Firefighters Association was launched by the airport's Fire Service in January 2001 and is now one of the biggest, most active associations in the UK.
The branch is funded directly by BAA Edinburgh, through fund raising activities carried out by the cadets and donations kindly received from the general public.
All the instructors are volunteers and full time firefighters.
The Young Firefighters, both male and female, range in age from 13 - 17 years old and come from schools in West and East Lothian as well as the City of Edinburgh itself. During their time in the initiative, the cadets follow a four stage firefighter training programme. On completion of that programme, they attain a National Vocational Qualification in Firefighting.
The YFA branch meets every Tuesday evening where the cadets learn about all the theoretical aspects of being a firefighter and carry out various practical drills and exercises, incorporating hose running, the use of ladders and the use of Fire Service appliances and equipment, including breathing apparatus.
The branch also plays an important part in Edinburgh Airport's local communities, regularly attending Gala days and other events, which helps to raise the profile of the Young Firefighters Association. The importance of Community Fire Safety is also promoted at these events by distributing leaflets and literature on Fire safety in the home.
Each year, the cadets attend a summer camp at outward bound activity centres throughout the country. This year's camp is being hosted by BAA Edinburgh Airport and will be held at Fordell Firs in Fife. It will be attended by approximately 900 cadets from all over the UK and Europe. The cadets will be rock climbing, abseiling kayaking and pot holing, activities which are great fun and help build self confidence and team spirit.
