Faro in the South of Portugal is an entry point to the beautiful Algarve, known for its remarkably beautiful beaches, lively atmosphere and café culture. Its long dry summers make a great sun and beach holiday setting while the climate staying mild the whole year means it draws in tourists all year round looking to indulge in the area’s other offerings.
Faro itself is quieter than many of the other Algarve resorts so is a lovely, tranquil spot to escape to. Its charming Old Town is great for shopping and one of its standout beaches, the Praia de Faro has a selection of easy going beach bars and cafes to enjoy the amazing climate that the area has to offer. Travel just outside to the village of Estoi where you can visit the pink Estoi Palace and also the ruins of the once grand Roman Villa of Milreu to see the stone mosaics which still remain.
Especially as you head west from Faro, there are fantastic resorts that offer a great family friendly atmosphere including Lagos with excellent hotels, a charismatic historic centre and lots of great restaurants for dining out. The Lagos area also offers fantastic excursions close by which the whole family will love including zoomarine where you can swim with the dolphins, water parks and surfing schools.
In fact the whole Algarve region is great for those who like to pack the most into their holiday with cave and dolphin watching boat trips as well lots of amazing hiking and cycling routes, perfect for those travelling offseason. However if you prefer a quieter, do-nothing type of holiday then the Algarve will not disappoint with a wealth of fantastic beaches and spas to simply relax with a book in hand.
