New international routes boost May passenger numbers for Edinburgh Airport

10 June 2014

Edinburgh Airport enjoyed a strong rise in international passenger traffic last month thanks to a number of major new route launches.

A total of 937,093 passengers travelled through Edinburgh Airport last month, a 3.5% increase on May 2013. International traffic increased by 5.7% with 517,543 passengers travelling through the airport. Domestic passenger numbers also rose by 0.9% from 415,808 to 419,550.

The strong increase of international passenger traffic is largely down to the launch of a number of long and short-haul routes last month. From easyJet’s new services to Bodrum and Heraklion, Jet2 starting a new service to Verona, Swiss carrier Edelweiss launching a new flight to Zurich and the three major long-haul routes to Chicago, Philadelphia and Doha within one week of each other, May was the most successful month on record for new business from Scotland’s busiest airport.

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: "May was a tremendous month for us at Edinburgh Airport. We enjoyed two of our most successful weeks ever when we launched four international airline routes, something which we’ve never experienced before.

"We worked hard with our City partners to deliver Edinburgh’s first Middle Eastern route and we’re looking forward to a successful partnership with Qatar Airways who are operating Scotland’s first scheduled Dreamliner.

"The success of these new routes will enhance our global connectivity and ensure we continue to provide our passengers with the best choice possible.

"With the school summer holidays just around the corner, coupled with the Ryder Cup and Edinburgh Festival, we’re looking forward to welcoming many thousands of passengers through our airport over the coming weeks."
